Accessory Bits
to go along with phonetic literacy on a piece of paper
Since more is more, let's offer more to those who can reach us. Here
are some accessories to a basic phonetic literacy instrument that
might be helpful to some, whether to be added to a booklet version, or
made available on the net to anyone who can just get here and might
benefit.
- Versioning. Subcategorize and reformat the BPLI based on language
family/typology features skip the tone section for non-tonal
languages, add uvulars, interdentals, labiodentals, pharyngeals,
for languages or language families that use them.
- Sequencing. Teach Left to right letter sequencing: any words, an arrow showing direction.
- Punctuation. Teach space between no-sandhi words. Period,
exclamation point, and question mark. Comma for sequences of
similars. Colon: the preceding is exemplified or represented by
the following.
- Pencil-holding. Add a drawing that teaches How to write: just a hand holding a pencil.
- Practice. How to practice indicated by lines of repetition, student drawing many samples. But also say them!
- Uses. Demonstrations of how to use literacy:
- reading aloud before others
- reading a child to sleep,
- reading the street signs and when to get off the bus.
- Write your name. Write your name on your stuff.
- Write notes to each other.
- Letters to travelling family.
- Messages to your children for after you are gone.
- Remember and teach your skills and technologies.
- Anything specially memorable.
- Songs.
- Recipes.
- Family history.
- Contracts/agreements.
- Knowledge of the natural world.
- Poetry, stories, true or false.
- Mythologies, religious ideas, anything that is meaningful and verbally expressible.

- Describe survey/poll tasks
- Offer instrument upside down and observe if they rotate it around or not.
- Point at symbols and ask them to name or say each; keep track.
- Give the instrument without symbols as a quiz.

- Orthography support. Charts showing the mapping from IPA to each
symbol in other known scripts: IPA-to-script tables and also
Scriptionary apps for Devanagari, Urdu, etc.
- Language-dependent materials. Links to stuff in different
languages, links to all the wikipedias for those languages which
have a Wikipedia...
- Baseline content. Maybe we want to provide placeholders and
request-to-complete with instructions for people who come in, are
able with tech and a language in common, to enter in some stuff
as resources for others in any given target language. The first
steps in, should explain the benefits of literacy, and how to
learn, where to go to bootstrap oneself, what are the steps in
the literacy ladder, how to help ones kids and society climb it
and benefit from it. Ideally every unwritten language in the
world will acquire through completion of these placeholders, some
inventory of useful instructions and in-the-language materials
which will bring increasing benefits of modernity to its
speakers.
