This is a twiddleable penhold paddle. It is a hand-made clone of the
paddle of my friend Sung Yang (except mirrored for being a left-handed
paddle), who got it from his home country of Korea or invented it
himself. Here is a picture of it from the side.
It derives from a rectangular, long-handled penhold paddle.
The narrow neck of the handle allows fast and controlled one-handed
twiddling.
Front side is short pips (Clippa); back side is smooth
(Schildkrot Zoom 40: good spin also with good control).
This is similar to Liu Guoliang's paddle configuration: penhold,
pips on the front, smooth on the back for twiddling and for the
reverse-backhand stroke. But this paddle is rectangular (Korean
style) rather than round, and although carbon, it's not as fast as Liu
Guoliang's Clipper CR blade.
Thinner sponge (1.5 under the pips, 2.0 under the smooth) makes
for a lighter paddle; very important for the penhold grip!
The cork handle was cut (using not a knife but many thin-diameter
drill holes), leaving a triangular finger post, and the removed pieces
were used to fashion a finger post on the opposite side, attaching it
with superglue, and to widen both finger posts.
The gripping surfaces for thumb and forefinger have been filed
down, and small pieces of cork glued on for better fit to my own hand.
